The last but one peal on the present bells on 14 February was used as an opportunity to measure and record decibel readings at various locations in the centre of Taunton and nearby residential areas whilst the bells were ringing. An important part of the project is, for the first time, to fit sound control at the new belfry level. This will enable the church to have more control over the level of sound coming from the bells so that they can be fully heard for such things as weddings and services but be quieter for things like learners' practices. Further readings will be taken when the new bells are fitted to assist with adjusting the sound control to the desired level.
A Faculty has been granted for the St Mary's Bell project. This is the necessary legal document granted by the Chancellor of the Diocese to carry out the proposed work of lowering and recasting bells, installation of a new carillon and carrying out associated building work. This is a highly significant milestone in the progress of the project.
Tom Harris from Staplegrove tower has put together a most interesting and entertaining illustrated talk titled "A History of Bells and English Church Bell Ringing". Tom is an experienced speaker and has produced a talk that is designed to have a wide public appeal and not just to be of interest to bell ringers. He is very willing to give the talk to, for example, social groups and society meetings. It lasts from 45 – 60 minutes. Any donations are for the Bells of St Mary's project.
We've (half) made it! We are delighted to announce that, thanks to Christmas fund-raising and the arrival of donations and Gift Aid, more than half the required funds for the project have been raised. This is a real milestone and thanks to the so many people who have supported our fund-raising initiatives from buying Christmas cards to donating bells.
Although many of the bells are sponsored, we are looking for people to fund the fittings for the bells. The fittings are not as expensive as the bells and include things such as the clappers and wheels that allow the bells to sound and be rung by the bell ringers.
